The Farmer and the Horse: An Ancient Lesson in Mindfulness and Letting Go
There is an old Chinese Taoist parable known as The Farmer and the Horse. It appears in the ancient text Huainanzi and was later introduced to Western audiences through the teachings of Alan Watts a philosopher who had a remarkable gift for making ancient wisdom feel immediately relevant.
The story unfolds through a series of events in a farmer’s life. Each time something happens, good or seemingly bad, the people around him rush to label it. And each time, the farmer offers the same quiet, unhurried response:
“Maybe.”

What the Stoics and Mindfulness Teachers Agree On
This simple parable carries something that the ancient Stoic philosophers understood deeply too.
As Epictetus wrote:
“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”
Centuries apart, the Taoists and the Stoics arrived at the same quiet truth — and it is one that sits right at the heart of modern mindfulness practice.
Why We Rush to Judge and What It Costs Us
In everyday life, the mind is remarkably quick to judge experience. Something happens and almost instantly we decide: this is good, this is bad, this shouldn’t have happened, or this must mean something about the future.
From that moment forward, our thoughts and emotions begin to organise themselves around the story we have created, often before we have the full picture.
Research in cognitive behavioural science calls this cognitive appraisal the almost automatic meaning-making our minds engage in. And while it serves us in many situations, it can also lock us into interpretations of events that turn out to be incomplete, or simply wrong.
Mindfulness invites us to step back from this habit.
What Awareness Actually Teaches Us
When we bring awareness to our experience, we begin to notice how quickly the mind tries to create certainty by labelling events. Yet life rarely unfolds in such neat, predictable terms.
What appears challenging today may later reveal itself as a turning point. What seems fortunate in the moment may carry consequences we could not have predicted. The farmer in the parable understands this instinctively, not because he is detached from life, but because he is deeply present to it.
From the perspective of awareness, life is simply unfolding, moment by moment and our view of any situation is always partial, always limited by the moment we are standing in.

A More Spacious Way of Meeting Experience
Rather than rushing to conclusions, mindfulness encourages what teachers often call a more spacious way of meeting experience, observing what is happening without immediately deciding what it means.
Over time, this practice softens our need to control outcomes or judge events too quickly. We begin to recognise something the farmer already knew: we rarely see the full picture while events are still unfolding.
This is not passivity. It is not indifference. It is the quiet courage to remain open, to hold lightly what we think we know and make room for what we cannot yet see.
The Wisest Answer We Can Offer Life
The quiet wisdom within this old parable is not about giving up on discernment or becoming indifferent to outcomes. It is about learning to hold our interpretations more gently, to resist the pull toward premature certainty.
So, from the perspective of awareness, perhaps the most honest and grounded response we can offer life, especially in its more turbulent moments – is still the simplest one:
